By 2050, an estimated 70% of the global population will live in cities. As a result of increasing urbanisation, problems concerning sustainability and quality of life are becoming increasingly urgent for urban areas. Wageningen University & Research wants to achieve metropolitan solutions with impact, aiming for the realisation of cities and metropolitan areas that – in close relationship with the surrounding rural areas – are liveable, healthy and resilient, and have circular economies. To achieve impact, we work in close cooperation with stakeholders. We address aspects, such as heat islands, flooding, food supply, air quality, urban agriculture and liveability, as well as urban policy and urban planning.
This portfolio showcases a selection of recent solutions implemented by Wageningen University & Research for a diversity of problems that cities all over the world face.
