Description

AVANAR spatially determines the opportunities for outdoor reaction and matches them with the local demand. AVANAR takes availability, reachability and accessibility of the green environment into account. It helps local authorities to identify the shortages of recreational opportunities. With this information local authorities can decide whether action is required to increase the number of opportunities, or to safeguard existing opportunities against strong pressures to convert urban 'green-areas' into dwellings, parking lots, etc. AVANAR has been applied nationally for the Netherlands and in the three largest cities of the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

The AVANAR method is based on confronting demand and supply outdoor recreation. A circle is drawn around the centre of each neighbourhood. The size of the circle is determined by a user-defined distance. This is the distance within which enough supply should be available for the local population. For example, in the first Dutch national application, this distance was set at five kilometres, for walking as well as for cycling.
